In the first part of this article Are You Unknowingly Sabotaging Your Success Part 1, I discussed how the process of behavioral programming occurs and the effect of the sub conscious mind on our actions. I also explained the law of attraction and how this can effect what happens in our lives, remember like attracts like so you draw towards you what you are thinking about subconsciously, therefore if you are having negatIve thoughts you are more likely to draw negative things towards you.
In this article I will go into more depth to help you understand the process and importance of the subconscious mind.
I would like to share with you an alignment model to help you establish where you are at and how you can implement positive behavior change.
Alignment Model
1. BEHAVIOUR
2. BELIEFS / VALUES
3. CAPABILITIES
4. ENVIRONMENT
5. IDENTITY
6. SPIRITUALITY
I will now explain each part of this model and to help you understand I am going to use the analogy of driving a car as this is something most people can identify with.
Behaviour - In this case your behavior would be about how well you actually drive the car on the road
Beliefs / Values - This is about how you think about yourself as a driver and what you do and dnont like about driving
Capabilities - Are you able to drive the car (do you have appropriate sight, reflexes etc)
Environment - This is the car itself including the road
Identity - Unless your racing driver your probably not going to see driving as part of your identity more like something that you do for convenience
Spirituality - This involves why are we here? In the car analogy were you born to be a car driver
So to make sense of this most peoples behaviours (how well you drive the car) are the most important, however people are often dictated to by their environment (the road and the car) and their beliefs.
In the context of health and wellbeing we must try and find out which part of this model is out of alignment. Often we place the emphasis on our environment and this effects our behavior, for example, if we are sedentary in our jobs (our environment) this makes us sedentary in our lives (our beahvior) and we think of ourselves as people who go to work in our cars, do our jobs, come home and relax before doing it all over again the next day, why beasue that is our lives (our beleifs).
I am now going to re-arrange this model in a more balanced order for optimal health:
1. SPIRITUALITY
2. IDENTITY
3. BELEIFS AND VALUES
4. CAPABILITIES
5. BEHAVIORS
6. ENVIRONMENT
How can this be right I hear you ask? Well let me explain:
In order to achieve optimal health we must have a positive subconscious thought process as to why we are here (our spirituality). Once you find this you can move towards a happy and fulfilling life where everyday is exciting and unique. The next step is our identity. We must begin to identify ourselves with our ideal of what we want to be and what we want to acvhieve (this can be done via setting challening and stimulating goals). Our beleifs and values are crucially important. Most people put their family as their number one priority, then their house, often next comes their cars and possessions and looking after themselves comes way down on the list. I will put it to you...if you are not healthy, vital and enjoy life, will this effect your family life? My guess would be yes. If you become ill or unable to work who is going to pay for your house? So my next question is why are we not looking after our bodies through optimal nurtition (eating right for your metabolic type), getting regular exercise, getting to bed by 10:30pm, drinking sufficient good quality water, taking time out for ourselves (something that you enjoy doing) and thinking positively about ourselves?
Capabilities is something that on occassions we may need help with such as help to exercise or eat right and that is where the health and performance coaching sessions offered can be invaluable. Now we have reached behaviours, what you actually do...if everything else is in alignment above I guarantee you will make optimal choices for your health and vitality and this includes your environment.
So with that in mind I am going to leave you with two things to think about before I include in the next blog some clear strategies to help you make postive changes now!
The first thing to make you aware of is that CHANGE and ion this case we are talking about positive behavior change is scary to humans and promotes panic in those around you. Your friends and family will make one of two choices they will either:
a) Feel threatened by your chocies to better yourself and try and bring you back to their level (this is not consciously malicious this is there subconsious reacting via their own beleifs system). I am sure you have all experienced this, maybe on a night out questions such as oh why are you not drinking your being boring or go on have that double chocolate cake you no you want to
b) The second thing are words from argubly the most intellgient man that has ever lived Albert Einstein and his definition of insanity which is...................To always do what you have always done and expect something differen to happen!!
Tune in next time and I will show you how to implement positive changes and feel better than you ever thought possible.
